Grace A. Barnes nee Thomas passed away at the age of 78 at The Woodlands Nursing Home
where she resided up until her passing. She will join her husband — the late Johnny Lee Barnes, her
mom — the late Nellie L. Hall nee Simpson, and her only sister — the late Juanita Nix. It is with
the heaviest of hearts that the children of the decedent announce and share this information with the
many family members, friends, and acquaintances their mom touched during her lifetime.
Grace was born in Albany, Georgia where she stayed until she moved to Newark, NJ as a
young adult. Grace held various jobs throughout her lifetime, but most will remember her for being
their surrogate mother. She was soft spoken, gentle, and kind; but also, stern when it came to
keeping her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren on the straight and narrow.
Grace was a self-taught, disciplined artist who had a great love for drawing and coloring.
Among her favorites to draw were birds, flowers, tigers, Disney characters, and many other animated things. No matter where she was, be
it at home, the hospital, or nursing home she made sure she had some way to draw.
She always shared her drawings with family, friends, and
even favorite doctors. Second to her love of art was fishing. She was quite good at sharing her passion for fishing and getting others just as excited about it. She taught many of her children and
grandchildren how to fish from baiting the hook to skillfully reeling in a catch.
She is survived by her five children, Denise, David, Garry, Ruthie, and Barbara as well as a
son-in-law (Dennis) and a daughter-in-law (Kimberly). She leaves behind 13 grandchildren,
12 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren,
as well as her 2 nieces and 4 nephews Deborah, James, Anita, Michael, Tony and Eric and a host of great nieces & nephews as well as cousins.
We would like to welcome and extend an invitation to her relatives, friends, and acquaintances as we stand together in celebration of her life as she makes her transition
